To date (10 years plus) I have not had any problem with the

This would cause serious problems, I would think: studios using Ataris
probably have more than one Atari...the program would then be "frozen"
to one computer. If I had a rush job to do using Notator S/L and my
Atari 1040 ST was on the fritz, I could no doubt borrow another Atari
and using the dongle, would be able to carry on with the job. (Not that
I'm in favor of the dongle - but so far I've had no problem with it).
Using the serial number of a ROM (if you mean CD ROM?) would render my
program useless forever....I do not have a CD ROM for the Atari and
probably never will.
