[Notator/Creator SL mailing list]
Sorry for asking about this again, but I'm working on the Notator FAQ
and want to get my facts straight, so perhaps some of you can help me
get this right?
Basically I need help from someone who's using a system which includes
the following:
-Notator SL
-Notator Logic
-Unitor 2
-Export
For the FAQ I'm working on a chart (below) which explains how many MIDI
ports/channels one can get with the various hardware.
I believe most of the stuff below is correct, but please look it over.
The confusion starts with the Log-3 and Export units.
I know that songs that have been made on systems with an "Export"
(ports B,C and D) automatically get re-assigned to the Log-3 (probably
for better MIDI transfer rates as the cartridge connector can handle
data faster than the serial port which Export is connected to).
Specifically, my questions are:
1) When an "old" song (i.e. made on a "Export" or "Export"/"Unitor" system)
utilising ports B,C and D are played back on a "Log-3"
(or "Log-3"/"Unitor"/"Export") system, what was previously ports B, C
and D will be output to ports G, H, and I (Log-3), right?
but will they be *displayed* in Notator SL as B, C and D or G, H and I?
2) When new songs are made with a "Log-3"/"Export" system, will
"Export" be ignored totally under Notator SL, and thus ports B, C and D
will be output to the Log-3 (marked as G, H and I on the Log-3
hardware, but displayed in Notator SL as B, C and D)?
3)....or can Notator SL use both "Log-3" and "Export"? At the same
time, or separately? How many MIDI channels can Notator SL then output,
and which port names correspond to which unit?
4) If "Export" is ignored under Notator SL (due to the 96 MIDI channel
limit I believe), is it used under Notator Logic (for a total of 144
MIDI OUT channels), or does the "Log-3" simply make the "Export"
redundant?
Here follows my draft for the FAQ additions so far (under the "what are all
those black boxes for?" section).
Please take a look and see if I've got it right and what needs changing
as there's some guesswork involved here.
Thanks.

LOG-3
The Log-3 also contains 3 additional MIDI OUT ports (actually, there
are 4 OUT connectors
present, but 2 of these are connected to the same port).
In Notator SL this gives you MIDI output to ports "B", "C" and "D"
which is incidently
the same ports as the "Export" unit gives....
Let me explain; due to the architecture of the RS-232 port (which is a
serial port, meaning data for those 3 ports have to be shared and thus
can congest
and be delayed as opposed to a parallel port as the cartridge connector
which the Log-3 is connected to), Emagic probably found it beneficial
to take advantage of this instead, causing a more steady MIDI flow.
Songs that have been recorded using Notator/Creator SL, utilising Export's "B",
"C" and "D" ports are automatically converted and routed to ports "G",
"H" and "I" of the Log-3 respectively (note: only version 3.21 of
Notator SL supports the Log-3).
The Log-3 can also be used together with the Unitor 2 (but not the
Unitor "C" or "N" units as these contain built-in dongles, and as
mentioned earlier you should not use Notator SL or Creator SL dongles
together with the Log-3.
A combination of the Log-3 and Unitor 2 will give you a total of 6 MIDI
OUT ports
(96 MIDI channels) and 3 MIDI IN ports and SMPTE sync in/out!
Here's an overwiew of what an expanded MIDI system with Notator SL can
give you:
System MIDI IN ports MIDI OUT ports (port names)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Atari ST 1 1 (A)
==============================================================
1 (16 MIDI channels) 1 (16 MIDI channels)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Atari ST 1 1 (A)
Unitor (C/N/2) 2 2 (E,F)
========================================================
3 (48 MIDI channels) 3 (48 MIDI channels)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Atari ST 1 1 (A)
Unitor (C/N/2) 2 2 (E,F)
Export 3 (B,C,D)
===============================================================
3 (48 MIDI channels) 6 (96 MIDI channels)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Atari ST 1 1 (A)
Unitor 2 2 2 (E,F)
Log-3 3 (B,C,D)
Export not used *
==================================================================
3 (48 MIDI channels) 6 (96 MIDI channels)
----------------------------------------------------------------
* As the Log-3 replaces the functions of Export when used with Notator SL 3.21,
the Export becomes redundant (Notator SL is limited to 96 MIDI OUT channels).
However, if Notator Logic is used on the same system, both the Log-3 and the
Export units can be used for a total of 144 MIDI OUT channels!
Notator Logic ONLY!
System MIDI IN ports MIDI OUT ports (port names)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Atari ST 1 1 (A)
Unitor 2 2 2 (E,F)
Log-3 3 (G,H,I)
Export 3 (B,C,D)
=============================================================
3 (48 MIDI channels) 9 (144 MIDI channels) ?????
