That's what I mean by it would seem to be a waste of resources for Apple to write something of their own in this vein, as opposed to (say) contributing some funds and development effort to Ardour instead. It would *very* much be in their interests to do that, because Linux is unlikely to ever replace Macs in pro studios, but it *could* replace Windows in home studios... > > On the other hand, due to the cost of Macs I would far rather Linux > > continued to blossom as an audio platform thanks to the likes of JACK > > and Ardour. I'm talking about Linux specifically, and saying that Linux does not compete with the ST as a sequencer platform at the moment. There are a few sequencers to choose from but they are not yet of sufficient quality to satisfy me. Let alone good enough and flexible enough and with the right modus operandi to tempt me away from Notator. I have no nostalgic attachment to the ST whatsoever (I didn't own one until it was already "obsolete" -- I was strictly Acorn as a kid). I use Notator on the ST because, for my purposes, it is the best option available to me Right Now. I am always on the look out for replacements because there are certain things that really wind me up about Notator. But music is my hobby, it doesn't pay any bills yet and with children there are many to pay, so I'm not prepared to spend a large amount of money on some crappy Windows software with significantly worse latency than the ST, and I don't *have* the even larger amount of money to spend on a Mac. Linux is getting there, one day, maybe even soon, I will probably start using it alongside Notator in my setup, but I suspect it will be a long time before Notator is no longer the hub of my little bedroom studio. > The technology that produced the ST and Notator has moved...not necessarily > for the better, but nevertheless...on! But I've got 2 spares, and currently there are plenty to be had off eBay for two a penny. Of greater concern in the meantime is running out of dongles/Log3s/Unitors, so we continue to push for NSL to be open sourced. To take your metaphor: Those who stay close to the surface of the sand are the ones who have a perpetual fear of being buried... got to keep moving, keep upgrading, to stay afloat. Me and my Atari, well, we're in an underground bunker, watching the shifting sands above our heads through a little window, but immune to their effects... until either (a) I spy a favourable current and decide to leave, or (b) the weight of the sand becomes too much and the bunker starts to collapse. I'm hoping (a) will happen before (b) [the latter ought to be at least another decade away yet], but I have a little escape plan ready just in case... -- It's a Jamm!n thing. _______________________________________________________ | Unsubscribe from the list? send the words: | | UNSUBSCRIBE NOTATOR to: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ | -------------------------------------------------------
