File uploads would cause no problems for a web forum, unlike forcing it into people's mailboxes (which is not a popular thing to do, which is why I've disabled the ability to do so here). Screenshots and even Notator songs/related files would take just about no room on the server. For digital camera images you'd convert the image that comes out of the camera (240/300 DPI print quality) into 72 DPI (screen resolution quality) prior to uploading them to the forum. That would save tons of disk space and also the viewer's patience when viewing. On the downside a web-based forum doesn't give that instant "here's a new posting" feature which you get with a mailing list. And with a forum like ours with relatively little activity many people might be interested to read ANY and ALL postings made in relation to Notator. Ideally, a web-based forum linked with a mailing list would be the way to go, but so far I haven't found such a solution for any of the web-forum software I've considered. Neither have I found an option for alerting members via email whenever there's ANY new activity (not just a posting in a particular discussion thread you've previously chosen to follow). I think we need to ask ourselves which features we want/need and what kind of setup will work best for our particular forum. -- Hallvard Tangeraas Notator mailing list owner & maintainer http://www.notator.org UNSUBSCRIBE?
